How Hard Is the Advanced Open Water Scuba Course?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that Advanced Open Water is “harder” than Open Water.

In reality—it’s not.

The Open Water course takes you from never diving to becoming a certified diver. That’s the biggest leap.

The Advanced course is different. It’s about:

  • Building on skills you already have

  • Gaining confidence through real diving experiences

  • Learning by doing—not sitting in a classroom

At Seminole Scuba, we keep it relaxed, fun, and focused on helping you grow as a diver—not testing you.

What’s the Difference Between Open Water and Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver?

The Open Water Diver course teaches you the fundamentals:

  • Equipment setup

  • Buoyancy basics

  • Safety procedures

The Advanced Open Water course is where you:

  • Fine-tune your skills

  • Explore different types of diving

  • Gain experience in real-world conditions

Here’s what makes Advanced Open Water different:

  • Minimal classroom time

  • No final exam

  • 5 total dives

  • 2 required dives: Deep + Navigation

  • 3 elective dives based on your interests

Think of it as a “sampler” of diving specialties—perfect for discovering what you love most.

What Dives Will I Do?

You’ll complete five Adventure Dives:

Required:

  • Deep Dive (down to 100 ft / 30m)

  • Underwater Navigation

Your Choice (based on availability and interest):

At Seminole Scuba, popular options often include:

  • Wreck Diving (a local favorite in Florida!)

  • Peak Performance Buoyancy

  • Night Diving

  • Drift Diving

  • Underwater Photography

We’ll help you choose dives that match your goals—whether that’s improving skills or just having fun exploring.

BONUS: Each Adventure Dive can count toward a future Specialty Certification.
