Africa 2023
I came to Africa for Safari, to explore and experience; to scuba in Zanzibar. I also came with many preconceived notions and ideas that were all incorrect.
We arrived in Nairobi to find a large vibrant city. Modern and complete. Once we left Giraffe Manor, which was amazing in and of itself, we were taken to our first camp. This was rhino camp. The climate was as variable as the landscapes. Mountains, savanna, plains and rivers. Cool mornings with warming winds, hot afternoons would end in spectacular sunsets, all the time the sounds of birds insects and large animals. This all in an expansive land that touched distant mountains. We saw Cape Buffalo, both black and white rhinos with a parade of zebra and giraffes. Two days later we were at lion camp the same expanse of land with even a larger array of animals. Cheetahs, Lion prides, elephants and hippopotamus, more zebra, gazelles and wildebeest. We saw leopards and Topis and ostriches, several birds of prey and storks and vultures. Night time the camps were dark and to venture outside the tents was prohibited. Large animals would roam the campsites at night letting you know by grunt or snort. Early mornings were a chorus of thousands of song birds. The biodiversity was astounding. If you never saw a wildlife documentary nor read or studied biology you would know that here, this place all modern land life began.
The Maasai people were our guides and guardians. They were kind, smart, patient with both their knowledge and their time. They had a pride about the land and all of the inhabitants that was felt.
Leaving Kenya to Zanzibar Tanzania was to go a wonderful resort for the final leg of this adventure. Breezes Resort was a nice change to the hustle of Safari to a relaxing time of scuba diving and island exploring. Here again, Swahili was the primary language and the staff were all gracious to all of us.
Diving on reef and rubble we found many sea creatures found only in this part of the Indian Ocean. Great time for All the divers in our group. Next step begins tomorrow with the long trek back home.
Africa has given me hope, perspective and a greater understanding of the larger world around us. Everything and everyone is 100% interconnected and all deserve respect and protection for a better future. -Tom H.
